The tempo is constant at exactly 116.83 bpm. An unusual tempo choice, but very clearly recorded to a click track. Possibly slowed down from 117 bpm after recording, resulting in a pitch of 439.4 Hz, which does not sound off.
It is very possible that Randy Hope-Taylor did not use those open strings in the chromatic runs in the chorus, but instead played the last four notes of mm. 35, 37 & 39 all on the same string and the first two notes of mm. 36, 38 & 40 on the D string (and respectively in the other choruses as well). He might have also played a 5-string, making the last two notes of the chorus easier to reach on the B string.
